Threads Age Verification Required: How to Pass and Regain Access
TL;DR
Threads shares its Accounts Center with Instagram, so an age check on Threads is a Meta-wide check on your linked identity. You can verify with a government ID, a video selfie, or three vouches from mutual contacts. Submit once, wait for the review, and do not create a new account while the block is active.
What the Threads age-verification screen actually is
Threads does not manage identity on its own. It runs on top of your Instagram login through Meta's Accounts Center, so anything that touches your age, your name, or your identity on Threads is being enforced at the Instagram or Accounts Center layer. If Threads pushes you into an age-verification flow, it is Meta asking, not the Threads app specifically. That matters, because the fix has to happen in the Accounts Center, and any decision there carries across to Instagram as well.
You will usually see a screen that blocks new posts, replies, and follows until you complete verification. The screen offers three options, and it disappears the moment Meta accepts one of them. Until then, engaging with the app in other ways (creating a second account, changing your date of birth, uninstalling and reinstalling) tends to make the block harder to lift, not easier.
Why Threads decided you needed to verify
Common triggers, in order of how often we see them:
- You edited your date of birth, or the system detected a mismatch between a stated age on Instagram and signals on Threads.
- You were reported by another user for appearing to be under the platform's minimum age.
- Meta ran a proactive sweep based on account behavior, network patterns, or the age of the linked email or phone.
- You are on a teen-restricted setup that Meta wants to confirm before restoring adult features.
The screen does not tell you which trigger fired, and Meta's documentation is deliberately vague on this to prevent gaming. Treat the trigger as unknowable and focus on completing the check cleanly the first time.
Your three verification options
| Method | What you submit | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| Government-issued ID | A photo of a passport, national ID card, or driver's license | Fastest for most people. The name and date of birth on the document must match what is on your Instagram profile, or the check fails. |
| Video selfie | A short video captured through the app, analysed by a third-party age-estimation provider Meta has contracted | Only offered in some regions. No image is retained by Meta after the estimate returns. |
| Social vouching | Three mutual followers who confirm your age | Slower, and each voucher must meet Meta's own criteria. Not always available. |
You do not always see all three. The app decides which to offer based on region, account history, and the reason for the check. Pick the one you are actually able to complete; a half-finished attempt at one method does not carry over to another.
Step-by-step: submitting a government ID
- Prepare the document. Passport, national ID, or driver's license. Make sure the full name and date of birth match your Instagram profile exactly. If they do not, correct the Instagram profile first through the Accounts Center, then start the verification.
- Photograph both sides in even lighting, on a plain background, without glare over the date of birth. Do not crop, filter, or annotate the image.
- Open the verification prompt from within Threads (it also appears in Instagram once the check is active) and choose ID upload.
- Upload the file and confirm. Meta encrypts the image, uses it for the check, and states that it is deleted within 30 days.
- Wait. Do not resubmit, do not switch methods, and do not close the case. The prompt updates in-app when a decision is made.
Step-by-step: the video selfie method
- Pick a well-lit space, face the camera directly, remove hats and glasses.
- Follow the on-screen prompts: usually a short head turn to confirm liveness.
- Submit through the app. A third-party age-estimation provider Meta has contracted analyses the frames and returns an age estimate. Meta states that the image and video are deleted after the estimate is returned.
- Result appears in the app. If the estimate places you above the required age, access is restored. If it does not, the app usually falls back to ID upload.
If your submission is rejected or the screen will not clear
The most common causes of rejection are mismatched profile data, a document Meta does not accept for your country, or an image the system could not read. Before you resubmit:
- Confirm the name and date of birth on your Instagram profile match the document exactly, character for character.
- Retake the photo without any editing, cropping, or overlay text.
- If the app keeps looping you back to the same screen, sign out of Threads and back in through Instagram. Do not delete the app.
A repeated rejection with no reason given is a signal to stop resubmitting and move to a formal complaint. Repeated submissions inside a short window are logged and can slow down the review.
What EU law says here
You have two levers under EU law. The first is the platform's own internal complaint-handling system, which the Digital Services Act requires Meta to operate for eligible users. Submit the complaint from your account, quote the case reference if you have one, and state clearly that a lawful account has been rendered inaccessible.
The second lever is external. Under Article 21 of the DSA you can bring the dispute to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body in your Member State. These bodies review platform decisions independently. If the underlying issue involves how Meta handled personal data during verification (retention of your ID, for example, or an incorrect age flag on file), a complaint to your national data protection authority under GDPR Article 77 is the appropriate route.
Read how Instagram handles the same verification flow for the Instagram-side details, since the two are tightly linked.
When to escalate to professional recovery
If you have completed a proper submission, waited the review window, and either received a rejection with no path forward or received no response at all, the internal appeal has run out of usable moves. That is the point at which professional account recovery becomes useful. Recover argues these cases on the substance (GDPR, DSA, and Meta's own terms) and reaches individual reviewers rather than the automated queue, with a 97% success rate and 96% of cases resolved within 30 days. If recovery fails, Recover's full money-back guarantee applies. See service tiers for how cases are scoped, or the FAQ for common questions.
