
Instagram Account Deleted: How to Reactivate It Within 30 Days
TL;DR
If you or a hacker deleted your Instagram account, you have 30 days to reactivate it by logging back in. After 30 days, the account is permanently removed. If the deletion was unauthorized, you may still recover it through legal channels under GDPR and the DSA.
Deactivated, Deleted, or Disabled: Which One Is It?
Three different states get confused all the time, and they have very different recovery paths.
Deactivated. You hid your account voluntarily through Settings. The profile becomes invisible to others, but every photo, follower, and DM is still on Instagram's servers. Log back in and your account reappears within minutes. There is no time limit.
Deleted. You tapped "Delete account" and confirmed. Instagram now treats your account as queued for permanent removal. You have a 30-day grace period to change your mind by logging back in. After 30 days the data is wiped from production servers and recovery is no longer possible through the normal flow.

If you see "Sorry, this page isn't available" when you visit your profile but you can still log in and reactivate, that's deactivation. If logging in shows "Your account has been disabled," that's a moderation action. If logging in succeeds and immediately offers to restore your account, that's the 30-day window after deletion.
The 30-Day Grace Period: How It Actually Works
When you delete your Instagram account, Meta does not erase the data immediately. Instead, your profile, photos, comments, DMs, and Reels are flagged for deletion and removed from public view. For 30 days, the data sits in a recoverable state. This is the same window Meta applies to Facebook and Threads.
During the 30 days:
- Other users see your profile as "User not found" or simply cannot find you in search.
- Your username is reserved and cannot be claimed by anyone else.
- Your DMs disappear from recipients' inboxes (in most cases).
- Logging in with your old credentials triggers a "Restore account" prompt.
After day 30, Instagram begins the irreversible removal process. The username is released into the pool, posts are deleted from production storage, and recovery through the app is no longer possible.
How to Reactivate Your Account in 4 Steps
If you are within the 30-day window, this is usually the entire process:
- Open the Instagram app or visit instagram.com. Use the same device and network you used before, if possible. Suspicious-activity checks are friendlier when the device is recognized.
- Log in with your old username, email, or phone number, and your password. Do not create a new account first. If you have already made a placeholder account, log out of it before continuing.
- Tap "Restore account" on the prompt that appears. If you do not see this prompt, your account may already be past the 30-day mark, or the credentials may be wrong. Try password reset before assuming the worst.
- Pass the security check. Instagram may ask for SMS verification or an email code. Confirm and you are back in.
Followers, posts, captions, comments, and saved DMs return automatically. Stories older than 24 hours are gone for good. That is unrelated to deletion.
When Reactivation Fails
The login flow does not always work. Common scenarios:
You forgot the password. Use the "Forgot password" link. The reset email goes to whatever address was on file when you deleted the account. If you no longer have that email, contact Instagram support through the in-app help center and ask for an alternative verification path.
You changed your phone number. The login flow may insist on SMS verification. Tap "Need more help" and submit a request through Instagram's account access form. Provide a government ID matching the name on the account.
The "Restore account" prompt never appears. Either you are past the 30 days, or Instagram is not recognizing the deletion event. Wait an hour, try a different device, and contact support if the prompt still does not show.

What If a Hacker Deleted Your Account?
This is the most common reason people search for deletion recovery: someone gained access, then deleted the account out of spite or to cover their tracks. The good news is that as long as the deletion happened in the past 30 days, the data is still recoverable. The bad news is that the hacker has probably changed the email and phone number, so the standard login flow will fail.
The path back in:
- Visit instagram.com/hacked and select "My account was deleted."
- Provide the original email or phone number you used to register.
- Verify your identity by submitting a video selfie. Instagram's automated system compares the face to photos that were on the account.
- If automated verification fails, escalate by submitting a government ID and a written statement explaining what happened.
If you make no progress through these channels within 7 to 14 days, the account will likely cross the 30-day deletion threshold and become unrecoverable through Meta's normal tooling. At that point, legal escalation is the only option.

Your Legal Rights Under GDPR and the DSA
EU residents have specific protections that go beyond what the help center documents.
GDPR Article 15, right of access. You can demand a copy of all personal data Meta holds about you, including data they retain after a deletion. This can be useful for proving ownership when filing a recovery request, especially when the standard verification fails.
Digital Services Act, Article 20, internal complaint handling. Very Large Online Platforms (Instagram qualifies) must offer a free, effective internal appeal mechanism. If your account was deleted as a result of a fraudulent report or unauthorized access, and the help center is dismissing your appeal, the DSA requires a substantive review by a human, not just a bot.
DSA Article 21, out-of-court dispute settlement. If Meta refuses to restore the account, you can escalate to a certified out-of-court dispute resolution body. Decisions can be binding on the platform.
Once you cross the 30-day mark, internal recovery is essentially closed. Legal channels stay open longer because data may remain in backups for legitimate purposes (fraud investigation, legal claims) for up to 90 days or more.
